Guidance for patients on LGBTQ+ healthcare

If you want to change your gender marker on your medical record.

If you’re under 18, unfortunately we’re not allowed to do that. But what we can do is put your preferred name and pronouns on your records. Also, if you change your name by deed poll then we can get your medical record changed to reflect your chosen name.

If you identify as non-binary we can put this on your medical record too.

We would also advise that you book an appointment with a GP to discuss referral to paediatrics or the children and adolescent mental health service (CAMHs) who are able to refer you to the gender identity development service.

If you are 18 or over, we can change your gender marker on your medical records. You don’t need anything for us to do that – once you request it we can get that sorted. But we would advise you have an appointment with a GP/GP registrar because:

  • when you change your gender marker you get a completely new patient record with a new NHS number. Ideally (and supposedly) your old records/notes should be amalgamated with your new notes. But that sometimes doesn’t happen so you can have some lost notes for a while and two different records. We want you to be aware of this.
  • You may be eligible and not eligible for certain screening. When you change your gender marker we want to ensure that you are invited for the correct screening based on the organs you have. We can add you to a list of patients and ensure you’re invited to the correct screening.
  • If you wish to be referred to an NHS gender identity clinic you need an appointment for us to refer you.

If you go privately to a gender identity clinic we would advise that you go to an accredited gender identity service provider: Doctors and psychologists specialising in gender dysphoria – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) Unfortunately, if they ask us to prescribe any medications for you however as they are a private service we would likely have to decline that request.
