Important Information for Patients Taking HRT and Weight loss injections (e.g. Mounjaro)
Posted on:
If you are taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and you have been prescribed an incretin-based medication such as tirzepatide/mounjaro, please read this important information:
- Incretin-based therapies can slow down how your stomach empties food and medicines.
- This may affect how well your body absorbs the hormone called progesterone if you take it by mouth (oral).
- Progesterone is important in your HRT to protect your womb lining.
What This Means for You
- Your prescriber may need to increase your progesterone dose temporarily when you start or increase your weight loss medication.
- This helps ensure your womb lining stays healthy and reduces the risk of irregular bleeding.
- It’s important to tell your doctor if you notice any unusual bleeding or spotting.
What You Should Do
- Always inform your healthcare team if you start, stop, or change the dose of any medication, including weight loss therapies.
- Report any new or unexpected bleeding to your GP if they manage your HRT or your menopause specialist promptly. You may complete a Blinx Health form to report this to your GP.
- Your doctor may want to check your treatment more often to make sure your HRT is working well alongside your other medications.
Maintaining the right hormone levels is important for your safety and to prevent complications. We want to make sure you get the best care and support while using both HRT and weight loss medications.
